WINDER - Nan Carter, 76, died Sunday, May 23, 2010.
Born in Wilcox County, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Gladys Wright Whitaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grayden E. Carter; and a son, Patrick Carter. Mrs. Carter was a former member of the Eastern Star, VFW Auxillary and a retired seamstress and cook. A member of Eastside Baptist Church, she taught Sunday school for 17 years and youth for three years. She did volunteer work as a Pink Lady at the Fitzgerald Dorminy Medical Center and at the Wilcox Public Library. She was also a member of the Martha McCloud UDC of Wilcox County.
Survivors include sons, Shaughn Carter, Winder, Shannon Carter, Norwich, Conn., and Ian Carter, Decatur; daughters, Nancy Ray, Winder and Jennifer Emmerling, Lawrenceville; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Irwin Whitaker, Huntsville, Ala. and Travis Whitaker, Fayetteville; sisters Betty Galbrith, Somers, Conn. and Carlese Wood, Somers, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 29, at 11 a.m. from Smith Memory Chapel with the Rev. Darrell Gilmer officiating. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, May 28, from 6 to 9 p.m.
