ATHENS – J.C. Fortson, 85, died Tuesday, May 4, 2010.
A native of Madison County, he was born on December 26, 1924, the son of the late Sam and Eunice Smith Fortson. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was employed with Georgia Natural Gas Company for 25 years. He was of the Baptist denomination.
He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather loved ones stated. He was a passionate farmer, gardener and woodworker.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Myrle Edwards Fortson, Athens; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Janie Fortson, Juliette, and Jerry and Kay Fortson, Colbert; grandchildren, Chris Fortson (Lisa), Colbert, Brook Hayes (Jay), Macon, and Jason Fortson (Valerie), Comer; great-grandchildren, Isaac Hayes, Macon, Jake Strickland and Tyler Fortson, both of Colbert, and Abby Fortson, Comer.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 7, at 3 p.m., from the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the Meadow Baptist Church Cemetery in Comer. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, May 6, from 6 to 8 p.m.
