CORNELIA – James Robert Acrey, 78, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010.
Born in Banks County on November 5, 1931, he was the son of the late Kelsey John David and Cora Gailey Acrey. Mr. Acrey was preceded in death by a sister, Minnie Lee Aikens; and brother, Everett “Buck” Acrey. He was a member of B.C. Grant Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, trustee, choir director and Sunday School Teacher. He was a life member of Grant Reeves V.F.W. Post # 7720, and was a veteran having served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired maintenance supervisor with Baycor Manufacturing Company and was formerly employed with Chicopee Manufacturing with 25 years of service. He was best known for his love of farming, gardening and raising cattle.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Gerrin Acrey, Cornelia; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Ronnie Crocker, Alto; son, Jimmy Acrey, Cornelia; brother, Richard Acrey, Gainesville; grandchildren and spouses, Christy and Trent Goss, Alto, and Angela and George Catchings, Decatur; and great-grandchildren, Eli and Sarah Grace Goss.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 1, at 2 p.m., at B.C. Grant Baptist Church with the Revs. Doyal Conley and Austin Kelley officiating. Burial will be in the V.F.W. Memorial Park with Pastor James Franklin officiating at the graveside. Mr. Acrey will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, April 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, is in charge of arrangements.
