Woody Meriwether, 93, died Thursday, April 15, 2010, at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
In recent months, due to failing health, he lived at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home in Augusta. He was retired from the Veterans Canteen Service and was a decorated World War II United States Army Staff Sergeant, where he served in the Asiatic-Pacific campaign and fought in the Philippians till the end of the war. Prior to World War II, he worked with CCC in a camp near Dahlonega. The CCC helped restore many National monuments and built bridges and dams across Georgia.
Survivors include his wife, Annelle Landrum Meriwether, Commerce; stepson, James and Kay Mitchell; grandchildren, Kathy Shirley, Wendy Miller and Bobby Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Aaron Veal, Andy and Ben Shirley and Becky Shirley and Lydia Anne and Emma Mitchell, all of Commerce; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Graveside services will be held at Rest Haven Cemetery in Decatur.
