COMER – James T. “Tom” Compton, 76, died Monday, March 29, 2010, at his residence.
A native of Comer, he was the son of the late Neal A. and Jessie Lou Cooper Compton. He was the owner and operator of Tom Compton Trucking as a dump truck driver. Throughout his working career, he was a logger, bulldozer operator, an all around heavy machine operator and an airplane pilot. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Compton was preceded in death by a son, Michael Gene Compton; brothers and sisters, Waco D. Compton, Hulda Mae Petty, Wayne Compton, Amanda Weart and Neal Compton Jr.
Survivors include children, James Thomas “Jimmy” Compton Jr., Comer, Mary Ann Reese, Hull, Robert F. Compton, Comer; former wife, Mary Compton Bielicki; friend and companion, Dorothy Bales; sisters, Charlotte Cooper Cozens, Clarksville, Betty Hartsville, Carrollton; grandchildren, James Henry Compton, Justin Whitehead, Bobby Compton, Asa Compton, Jesse Compton, Trey Compton, Gracie Strickland, Chizra Reese, Brock Compton, Wyatt Reese and Cody Compton; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 2, at 2 p.m., from the Vineyards Creek Baptist Church with Larry Green officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and granddaughters will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, March 31, and Thursday, April 1, from 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Vineyards Creek Baptist Church.
