Dr. Robert Atkeson “Doc” McCreery, 92, died Monday, February 22, 2010, following a short illness.
Born on May 30, 1917, in Columbia, Mo., he was the son of the late James Wesley and Gladys Atkeson McCreery. In the course of his studies and work, he and his family moved to Virginia, Washington and Costa Rica. A resident of Jackson County since 1957, he was Professor of Agronomy at the University of Georgia for more than 20 years. He was active in Jefferson Rotary and volunteered in many county activities, including literacy programs and rebuilding the grist mill at Hurricane Shoals Park. Mr. McCreery was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Isabel Adams McCreery; a son, Robert Michael McCreery; and daughters-in-law, Candace Reynolds McCreery, Felice Armstrong McCreery and Sharon Niles McCreery.
Survivors include children and spouses, Betty and Bill Turner, Bill and Sharon McCreery, Eleanor and Clyde Brannen and James McCreery, all of Jefferson, Paul McCreery, Austell, and Susan and Charles LaCount, Watkinsville; a sister, Catherine Temple; sisters-in-law, Betty McCreery and Nell McCreery; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Jefferson Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 27, at 2 p.m. A reception immediately following will be held in Thurmon Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jackson County Senior Center, 151 General Jackson Dr., Jefferson, GA 30549.
Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, is in charge of arrangements.

Doc McCreery was a special person and even though I have not seen him in 10 years I haven't forgotten him. I awlays admired the work and goodness he and his wife did. They both made a difference in alot of people's lives and I am sure they will be missed!
