DEMOREST – Mrs. Doris Elrod, 91, longtime Jefferson resident, died Saturday, February 13, 2010, at Demorest.
Born on October 4, 1918, in Roebuck, S.C., she was the daughter of the late John T. and Bertha Mae Montgomery. Mrs. Elrod was preceded in death by her husband, Frary Elrod, author of a Jackson County history “Historical Notes on Jackson County, Georgia,” and officially named Jackson County historian in the late 1960s.
Mrs. Elrod was a homemaker, a former employee of Jackson EMC and The Jackson Herald and was a member of the Jefferson First Baptist Church. Like her husband, she had been involved in various Jackson County historical and preservation efforts. She was a volunteer at the Crawford W. Long Museum for many years and enjoyed walking in her neighborhood on the Old Pendergrass Road, Jefferson.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Luther and Kathy Elrod, Mt. Airy, and John and Ulla Elrod, Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Barbara, Thomas, Susan and Louis Elrod.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 16, at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with Michael Helms officiating. Interment will follow in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson. The family will receive friends Monday, February 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Whitfield Funeral Home, Demorest, and from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour Tuesday at Evans Funeral Home.
