HULL - Joe Ellis McCannon, 77, husband of Maudene C. McCannon, died November 1, 2009 at his residence.
A native of Oglethorpe County, he was the son of the late Shubb and Lessie Patton McCannon. Joe was a member of Moriah Primative Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and treasurer. He retired from Cooper Tire Company after 30 years. While working for Cooper Tire Company, Joe's true passion was maintaining a cattle and poultry farm. He held an Honorary FFA Degree, was the 1994 Madison County Purebred Breeder of the Year and Broad River Soil and Water Conservation Farm Family of the Year in 1998. He was a member of the Madison County Young Farmers, Madison County Cattleman's Association, and the Georgia Cattleman's Association, Life Member of the American Angus Association, Georgia Angus Association and member of the Georgia Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Kelly Cunningham McCannon, Carnesville, Steve and Nancy McCannon, Pendleton, S.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and David Echols, Hull; brother, Eugene McCannon, Athens; sisters, Fradie King, Atlanta, Mary Alice Marsh, Griffin, Betty Jones, Jackson; grandchildren, Dr. Christy McCannon Hooper, Katie McCannon, Heather Echols, Joey McCannon and Hayden Echols.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, November 3, at 11 a.m., at Lord and Stephens Danielsville Chapel with Elder Dolph Painter and Elder Eddie Whidby officiating. Burial will be in Union Baptist Church Cemetery with Elder Gary Hall and Brother Ernie Bryson officiating. Pallbearers will be Terry Chandler, Rodney Chandler, Wesley Chandler, Brent Hooper, Will Cabe and Don King. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons, Joey McCannon and Hayden Echols. The family will receive friends Monday, November 2, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Moriah Primitive Baptist Church, c/o Jack Chandler, 44 Donald Smith Rd., Hull, GA 30646, or to the Madison County Agricultural Education Center, c/o any local First Citizens Bank.
