James (Jim) Randolph Warren (2-7-12)
POCATALIGO COMMUNITY – James (Jim) Randolph Warren, 84, died Tuesday, February 7, 2012 after a brief illness.
Born in Tignall, Wilkes County, he was the son of the late Francis Joseph “Frank” Warren Sr., and Celestia Angieline “Angie” Standard Warren. He attended school in Tignall until high school where he rode to Elberton with a neighbor and graduated in 1944 from Elbert County High School. He played saxophone in the Army band stationed at Seattle, Wash., and was honorably discharged when WWII ended. He studied architecture at both Georgia Tech and Auburn University. He lived in Atlanta where he worked for a time at Rich’s department store in downtown drawing their floor plans for displays and other renderings, and which was written up in the magazine section of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He and the family moved to Athens, where he designed and built several houses during the early 1960s that incorporated innovative energy saving designs and their construction techniques many years before the energy crisis made such techniques popular.
He had lived in the Pocataligo Community since 1967 and owned and operated for many years, Warren Tractor Co., the oldest Deutz, and later Deutz-Allis, dealership in the U.S. After retiring from selling farm equipment, he became active in the Broad River Watershed Association as its first newsletter editor. He studied extensively the uses and hazards to our water supply to change current practices of water management.
Mr. Warren was preceded in death by his brother, Francis Joseph “Joe” Warren, Jr., who died in 1925 and sister, Mary Will Warren (Walker) Dunson, in 2007.
Survivors include his former wife, Mary Bondurant Warren, Athens and their five children, Eve Bondurant Warren (Rick) Mayes, Pocataligo, Mark Standard Warren, Athens, Amy Warren Sanders, Jefferson and Lisa Warren (Darren) Hatch, Athens and La Verkin, Utah; eight grandchildren, Sean Weeks, Athens, Angie (Maj. JEFFERSON – Eva Craig Hogwood, 83, died Monday, February 6, 2012.
Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late John Clifford “Jobo” Craig and Myrtice Wilbanks Craig. Mrs. Hogwood was a member of Living Word Worship Center and worked at the Primp and Style Hair Salon in Jefferson for over 20 years.
Survivors include her children, Debbie and Wayne Norris, Jefferson, Kathy and Ira Morgan, Danielsville, David and Tina Hogwood, Pendergrass; brother, Steve Craig, Gainesville; grandchildren, Allen and Linda Love, Marty Love, Robin Hogwood, Greg Hogwood, Justin Neese and Betsy Ledesma; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Hank Bender (2-7-12)
COMMERCE - Henry J. Bender (Hank) passed away on February 7, 2012 at his home in the Berea Community near Commerce.
He was retired from the Navy Reserve, serving as Lt. Commander on the USS Smalley during the Korean Conflict and afterwards. After his Navy service, he worked for Aerospace Industries in Los Angeles, traveling constantly between Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Houston, Texas, and Cape Canaveral.
Bender was an expert in many fields besides his military and space involvement. He was an expert pilot and deep sea diver. He was a member of the Naval War College Foundation, the Civil Air Patrol, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and many other activities related to helping others in dire circumstances. He had a brilliant mind, with vast knowledge, not only in military matters, but also in the arts, including opera and music. He and his wife had visited most of the famous museums of the world.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Dunson Bender of Commerce; a son, Todd Dunson Bender and his wife, Cyndi Lowe Bender; a grandson and his wife, Patrick and Stacey Coughlin; and a great-granddaughter, Kinley, of Alpharetta. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Miriam Dunson of Commerce.
A memorial service will be held at the Commerce Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 9, at 2 p.m., with a reception following in the fellowship hall. The graveside service will be held at a later date at the Veterans' Cemetery at Canton, Ga.

COMMERCE - Rebecca G. Morris, 84, died Monday February 6, 2012.
A native of Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Kathleen Dickens Gilchrist. She was a telephone operator for Southern Bell and attended Colbert United Methodist Church. Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford L. Morris.
Survivors include sons, Mike (Debbie) Morris and Randy Morris; grandchildren, Matt Morris, Catherine Dinsmore, Allison Waddy, John Morris, Ben Morris, and Andrew Morris; and great-grandchild, Charlotte Dinsmore.

COMMERCE - Staab Morgan, 70, died Sunday, February 5, 2012 at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Morgan was born in Westberry, N.Y. to the late Frank J. and Frances Leonard Staab. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Morgan was preceded in death by her brother, Frank J. Staab, III.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald R. “Jerry” Morgan, Commerce; sons, Mike Morgan, Loganville and Tommy Morgan, Commerce; sister, Carol Wilkie, Commerce and six grandchildren.

Elmer Joe Hardegree (2-5-12)
WINDER – Elmer Joe Hardegree, 89, died Sunday, February 5, 2012 at his residence.
A native of Barrow County, he was the son of the late James Ernest (Dock) and Mary Elder Hardegree. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served as a military policeman during World War II. He also worked as a court crier/bailiff for three U.S. District Court Judges – Judge Robert Russell, Judge Neil Andrews and Judge Boyd Sloan, followed by employment as a Deputy U.S. Marshal. Mr. Hardegree retired from the Federal Government in 1969 after an appointment by the court and President Lyndon Johnson as United States Marshal of the Northern District of Georgia.
He enjoyed his retirement years on his farm in Barrow County, raising poultry and cattle. He also enjoyed researching his many ancestors through census records, visitation of cemeteries and courthouses and travel to other states for personal interviews. Mr. Hardegree willingly shared his knowledge of genealogy with other researchers and contributed information to publishers of several family histories includig The Harris Family, The Segars Family, The Elder Family, The Wages Family and the Hardegree/Hardigree Family. Mr. and Mrs. Hardegree helped to survey over thirty cemeteries in Barrow County for inclusion in Barrow County Georgia Cemeteries’ book published in 2000. He was a member of Cattlemen’s Association, Barrow County Historical Society, East Georgia Genealogical Society and Chapel Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Lema Wages Hardegree; children and spouses, Sue and John Sheats, Barbara and Jim Harwell, James and Sherry Hardegree, all of Winder and Debbie and Steve Johnson, Arnoldsville; eight grandchildren, Reed (Holly Sheats, Rory Sheats, Griffin Sheats, all of Winder, Audrey (Chuck) Neuschafer, Cimarron, Kan., Nathan (Tricia) Harwell, Cumming, Jennifer Hardegree, Beth (Phillip) Bell, all of Winder and Eli Johnson, Arnoldsville; two brothers, Donald (Doris) Hardigree and Jimmy Hardegree; and nine great-grandchildren, Luke and Tate Sheats; Drew, Katie and Sydney Harwell; Emma Neuschafer; Savanah Hardegree; Avery and J.P. LULA - John "Johnny" Ralph Barrett, 70, died Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Born in Fulton County, he was the son of the late John Bevel and Minnie Parson Barrett. He was a member of First Pentecostal Church and was retired from Martin Mechanical.
