LULA - William Allen Roberts, 71, died Monday, July 25, 2011 at his residence.
He was born in Nashville, Tenn., the son of the late Clarence Frank and Annie Eunice Wall Roberts. He was preceded in death by brothers, Clarence Roberts, Gerald Roberts and James Roberts; and a sister, Mary Roberts. He served in the United States Army. He retired from the State of Georgia Correctional Services as a training officer. He was of the Baptist denomination.
Survivors include his wife, Annette Roberts; sons, Allen Hembree, Gainesville, and Allen Roberts Jr., Goodlettsville, Tenn.; daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and Ricky Moore, Gainesville, Vicky and Stacy McCall, Lula, Brenda Roberts, Madison, Tenn., Patricia and Albert Lee, Mt. She was born on June 7, 1915, in Homer, the daughter of the late James B. and Mary Jackson White. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Ray Hartgrove; daughters, Carmen Hampton, Deborah Hooker, and Patricia Caudell; and son, Keith Caudell. Mrs. Hartgrove worked in the textile industry. She was of the Baptist denomination.

BALDWIN - Alfred "Jack" Dempsey Durham, 84, died on Friday, July 15, 2011, following complications of surgery.
Born in Homer, on June 25, 1927, he was the son of the late William Fletcher and Merle Ayers Durham. Mr. Dempsey was preceded in death by one brother Clinton Durham. He was a member of Level Grove Baptist Church and was a United States Army Veteran of World War II.╩ He retired from management with Georgia Pacific.

She was born in Banks County, the daughter of the late Fletcher and Elsie Mae Savage Evans. She was a retired seamstress and was member of the Believers Baptist Church. Mrs. Standridge was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Geri Brittany Standridge; sisters, Cordie, Annie Lois, Ola Mae, Mary, and Ethel; and brothers, Lee and Elton.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Luther Clyde Standridge, Hartwell; daughter, Carolyn Pointer, Lavonia; son, Luther Gerald Standridge, Jefferson; sister, Montine Davis, Jefferson; brothers, Alonzo Evans, Statham, Loyd Evans, Jefferson, Connie Lee Evans, Gulfport, Miss.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was born in Banks County, on August 29, 1934, the son of the late William and Ethel Watson Watkins. Mr. Watkins was preceded in death by brothers, John, Tom, and Hubert Watkins; sisters, Lucille Cook, Ruby Watkins; and an infant daughter. He was a United States Army Veteran. Mr. Watkins also drove in local car races at the Banks County, Stephens County, and Hall County Speedways, and was avid NASCAR fan. He was a bus driver for the Habersham County School System for over 37 years. His favorite pasttimes were driving students to football games, basketball games, and various field trips. Mr. Watkins was of the Baptist denomination. He was a member of Cornelia Lodge #92 F&A.M., and was a member of Yaarab Temple, and Mountaineer Shrine Club.
Survivors include his sister, Nell Watkins, Baldwin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Frances Watkins, Mt. Airy, and Clyde and Brenda Watkins, Demorest; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Ruby Nelle Rucker (7-11-11)
Ruby Nelle Martin Rucker was born March 10, 1917 to the late Sydney and Emma Jane Martin in Conyers. Ruby Nelle was saved at an early age and grew up in the church. When her mother died at an early age, Ruby Nelle was there to help take care of her young siblings. As a teenager, she moved to Banks County, to work as a domestic assistant. As fate would have it, this is where she met her husband, and the love of her life, Cornelius Rucker. Just prior to turning 20 years old, the pair was married, and they celebrated 74 years of wedded bliss until Ruby Nelle parted this life on Monday, July 11, 2011. Affectionately known to family, friends, and even strangers as “Big Mama”, Ruby Nelle was a loving and kind spirit who welcomed everyone.
Ruby Nelle worked various domestic jobs and at sewing plants throughout her young life. Together, she and Cornelius, built a family farm in Banks County, where many of their children and grandchildren still reside. After retiring from public jobs, Ruby Nelle truly spent her time being “Big Mama”. She could always be found cooking, sewing, and taking care of her garden or working with her flowers. She was well known for her big biscuits and her famous sweet potato pies.
Ruby Nelle was an active member of Neal’s Grove Baptist Church, where she worked in various auxiliaries and served faithfully as a mother of the church until her death. Her love of God, her family and people will always be remembered. Ruby Nelle had a generosity and hospitality that spills over into her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. There was never a time that “Big Mama” was not giving them something. She loved to give.
Ruby Nelle is preceded in death by two of her children, Cornolius Rucker and Betty Rucker, both of Commerce.
She leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband of 74 years, Cornelius Rucker, Commerce; two sons, Columbus Rucker (Alice) and James Rucker, both of Commerce; and three daughters, Ruby Williams (Billy) and Shirley Reed (Sam), all of Commerce, and Floncie Walker (Bonnie), Hoschton; one sister, Rosalee Williams; and one brother, Tee Martin, both of Atlanta; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

HOMER - Genell Whitfield Williams, 71, died on Sunday, July 10, 2011.
She was born in Banks County on April 10, 1940, the daughter of the late James Hubert and Ruby Gertrude Caudell Whitfield. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Williams; and daughter, Samantha Williams. She was a member of Charity Baptist Church, was a member of the WMU, and was a Sunday School Teacher for a number of years. Mrs. Williams was a homemaker.

Interment will follow in Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, July 12, until the funeral hour. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., on Monday, July 11, at The family requests that donations be made to the Charity Baptist Church, 1302 Hwy. 51 North, Homer, GA 30547.

She was born in Banks County on April 10, 1940, the daughter of the late James Hubert and Ruby Gertrude Caudell Whitfield. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Williams; and daughter, Samantha Williams. She was a member of Charity Baptist Church, was a member of the WMU, and was a Sunday School Teacher for a number of years. Mrs. Williams was a homemaker.
Survivors include her mother-in-law, Gladys Pierce, Martin; daughter, Becky Williams, Homer; sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Angela Williams, Commerce, and Danny and Dawn Williams, Carnesville; a sister, Carolyn Purcell, Mt. Airy; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Billy Poole, Homer; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Yvonne Whitfield, Mt. Airy, Gary and Lynn Whitfield, Homer, and Lamar and Debbie Whitfield, Clarkesville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, at Charity Baptist Church with the Revs. Scott Smith and Billy Burrell officiating.
