BOGART - Clifton Albert Ward, of 5600 Hog Mountain Road and former assistant commissioner of agriculture, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at his residence with his family at his side.
Born November 4, 1914 in Pine Park, he was the son of Daniel Patterson and Emma Rogers Ward. He was educated in Pine Park and Cairo, GA public schools. After graduation, he attended Middle Georgia College and the University of Georgia. He received his BS Degree in Animal Science upon completion. He then went on to receive his Master's Degree in animal nutrition from Iowa State. He returned to UGA where he was a professor of animal science for several years. He spent two years in New York City working for the American Jersey Cattle Club. After which he returned to Athens to continue his dairy farm operation and to teach at UGA. In 1957, he went to work in the GA Department of Agriculture as the dairy section chief, later becoming chairman of the GA Milk Commission and eventually becoming assistant commissioner of agriculture. He spent the rest of his public working career with the State of Georgia Department of Agriculture, retiring in 1978. Upon his retirement, he returned to his farm and family in Bogart. His farm and cows were one of his biggest enjoyments in life along with his family. He was a very productive cattle producer of Santa Gertrudis cattle. In 2003, Mr. Ward was inducted into the GA Cattleman’s Hall of Fame for his contributions and dedication to the cattle industry in the state. Through the years, he served in many civic organizations and was an active member and deacon at Bethabara Baptist Church.
Mr. Ward was preceded in death by the love of his life, Ruth Miller Ward; and a son-in-law, John A. Vaughan.
Survivors include children, Mary Ward Vaughan, sons, Albert (Margie) Ward, Lee (Cindy) Ward and Preston (Bonnie) Ward; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Janice B. Ward.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 30, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Lord & Stephens, WEST. Entombment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Clarke – Oconee Cattleman’s Association and deacons of Bethabara Baptist Church.
The family would like to thank Linda Wood and Jackie Parr for the dedicated service in helping to care for Mr. Ward.
Visitation will be Friday, April 29, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

CARNESVILLE – Roy W. Poole, 86, died Saturday, April 23, 2011, at his residence.

BALDWIN - Betty Ward White, 80, died on Monday, April 18, 2011.
Born on March 7, 1931, in Banks County, she was the daughter of the late Silas and Grace Caudell Ward. Mrs. White was preceded in death by a son, Michael Joe White. She was formerly employed with Carwood Manufacturing and Grady Garment Company. She was a homemaker and was involved with the Head Start Program in Banks County. Mrs. White was a member of Damascus Baptist Church in Baldwin.
Survivors include her loving husband of 62 years, Joe E. White, Baldwin; son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Shannon White, Baldwin; sisters, Lurlene Payne, Baldwin, and Ruby Meeler, Cornelia; brother, Charles Ward, Mt. Airy; and two grandchildren, Jessica White and Erica White.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 21, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, with David Terrell officiating. ALTO - Odell William Wade, 90, died on Thursday, April 14, 2011, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born in Alto on July 7, 1920, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Sherman and Ola Gailey Wade. Mr. Wade was preceded in death by his wife, Zinebell “Bell” Ausburn Wade; daughter, Linda Pritchett; brothers, Cody, Isaac, Artist, and Vance Wade; and a sister, Elsie Holcomb. He attended Crossroads Baptist Church in Alto and was a United States World War II Army Veteran, having proudly served his country. Mr. Wade served as Private First Class, Company B, 149th Infantry where he received a Purple Heart, a Victory Medal, and an American Theater Ribbon. He was a retired employee of Habersham Plantation where he worked as a carpenter for many years. Mr. Wade was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and friend. He also provided a loving home for many foster children. Mr. Wade loved gardening and woodworking.
Survivors include, daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Doug Ayers, Annette and Tommy Free, and Jeanette and Johnny Wade, all of Alto; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Darlene Wade, Alto; sisters, Joyce Jordan, Alto, Irene Pratchard, Cornelia, Imagene Stancil, Alto, and Sandra Poole, Baldwin; grandchildren, Bradley Ayers, Donna Clark, Tonya Chitwood, Jeff Pritchett, Christopher Pritchett, Pepper Adams, Heath Free, Shannon Free, Jennifer Brock and Roxann Bennett; 14 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
