HOMER – Vera Louise Newton Carter, 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 27, 2010.
A native of Bulloch County, “Mamaw” as she was lovingly known by her family, was the daughter of David Hines and May Louise Griner Newton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; and granddaughter, Sonja Cronia. After retiring as a supervisor from Blue Bell, Mrs. Carter lived an active life giving back to the community through her involvement with local Red Cross blood drives and the AARP. She was an active member for many years of Homer Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and participated in the Women’s Missionary Union.
With a life’s motto, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” she will always be known as a genuine Christian lady whose love for God reflected in her sweet spirit and the kindness she showed to others.
Survivors include her children, David Carter Sr., Barbara King and Gale Allen; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation for the family will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ivie Funeral Home in Commerce on Tuesday, November 30. She will lie in state at Homer Baptist Church from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1, with a celebration of life to follow at 2 p.m.

BALDWIN – Estelle Brock Simmons, 93, died Friday, November 26, 2010.
Born on June 28, 1917, in Habersham County, she was the daughter of the late John and Fannie Higgins Brock. She was preceded in death by her husband, Silvia B. Simmons; sisters, Cora Lee Simmons and Lessie Simmons; and brothers, Roy, Estees and J.W. Brock. Born on April 9, 1940, in Canon, he was the son of Gladys Pierce of Martin and the late Don Williams. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Samantha Williams. Mr. Williams was a member of Phi Delta Lodge # 148 Homer, and proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam conflict. He was the owner and operator of Central Pump and Well.

Elizabeth Shepherd
Elizabeth Shepherd of Atlanta died at home Thursday, October 18, 2010, at the age of 97.
She was born in Maysville to John and Lizzie Shepherd. She graduated from the University of Georgia. She taught school and later worked for the Federal government. After graduating from Atlanta Law School in 1949, she worked as an attorney for the Federal National Mortgage Association until her retirement. Mrs. Shepherd was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Rosalind Shepherd.
She is survived by her brother, John Shepherd, of Salem, Ore.; and her two nieces and two nephews.
She was buried in Sunrise Cemetery, Maysville, GA at a private family funeral.

Betty S. House, our mama, age 81, went home to be with Jesus and Daddy Saturday November 20, 2010 at 12:35 a.m.
She was the daughter of the late Albert and Pearl Segars. Mrs. House was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, James House; and brothers, Herbert and Carson Segars.
Mama was a dedicated Christian woman, loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was always serving her family and friends especially with prayers and cooking for them. As with Daddy, Mama would say, “You all still have a place in my heart and to live for Jesus and Pray”.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Kay House; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanne and Steve Webb and Diane and Dale Purcell; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, who were the brightest spots in her life and they all loved their Nanny Betty, Daphne and Matthew Moon, Holly and Ashley Little, Jamie and Joe Anderson, Jennifer Webb, Kevin and April Purcell, Sandie and Randy Parker, Tyler, Emily and Sara Moon, Ella Little, Emma and Colby Anderson, Landon Purcell, Andrew and Chandler Parker.

She was a member at First Baptist Church of Cornelia, having served as a nursery worker in her church for a number of years and was a retired employee of Community Bank and Trust with 25 years of service.

He was a retired truck driver with Transus in Atlanta, was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Atlanta, and attended Mountain Park First Baptist Church in Lilburn. He was a World War II United States Army veteran. Mr. McCoy was preceded in death a brother, Bill McCoy of Cornelia.

HOMER - Duey Finley, 84, died on Thursday, November 11, 2010, at his residence.
Born on January 18, 1926, in Columbus, he was the son of the late Acie and Alice Bryant Finley. Mr. Finley was also preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Ellis. He was the last of his immediate family. He was retired from the United States Army and proudly served his country for 20 dedicated years having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired from Sears in Atlanta with 22 years of service as a security officer and was a member of Damascus Baptist Church. Mr. Finley provided one of this area’s largest displays of Christmas lights each year for everyone to enjoy.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Kesler Finley, Homer; daughters and sons-in-laws, Diane and Jay Judy, Walterboro, S.C., Elsie and Barry Scercy, Homer; daughters, Debbie Hunt, Charleston, S.C., and Jeanie Clemmer, Maryville, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
