JEFFERSON – Dr. Charles H. Uhl, 92, formerly of Ithaca, N.Y., died Sunday, August 29, 2010.
He was born on May 28, 1918, in Schenectady, N.Y., the son of the late Harry C. and Florence Haupt Uhl. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a Professor of Plant Biology with Cornell University for 50 years. While at Cornell he served as an advisor to the Sigma Chi fraternity. He served as an usher at the First Presbyterian Church of Ithaca, was an honorary fellow with the Succulent and Cactus Society of America, and was a longtime member of the Ithaca Stamp Club and American Philatelic Society.
Survivors include his wife, Natalie W. Uhl, Jefferson; children, Natalie J., Mary, Charles and Elizabeth; brother, Robert I. Uhl, Atlanta; and grandchildren, Toby, Hugh and Amy.
Memorial services will be held Friday, September 3, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with the Revs. John Simmons and David Tinsley officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:30 a.m. until the hour of service.

DANIELSVILLE - Doris B. Gunnells, 85, died Monday August 30, 2010 at BJC Medical Center in Commerce.

JEFFERSON - Ms. Sue Hutchinson Clary, 64, of Hidden Lakes Trail, Jefferson, died Sunday, August 29, 2010, at the residence of her sister in Martinez.
A native of Thomson, she had made Jefferson her home since 2000. She was a retired dental hygienist and a homemaker. She was an active member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church and the Pilot Club, a service organization. Her last years were made joyful by her loving granddaughter, Kaley, and her grandson, Kenny.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Gloria Hutchinson; and brothers; Jimmy, Bob and Tom Hutchinson.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Kayla Clary, Jefferson; grandchildren, Kaley and Kenny; sister and brother-in-law, Jan and Paul Bilodeau, Martinez; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Thomas Samuel, Dr. Chris Sheils, special friend, Rosemary Matthews, the staff of the Comprehensive Cancer Center and 5-South at the Medical College of Georgia for the excellent and compassionate care that she received.

CLEVELAND – James Howard Dobbs, 60, died Wednesday, August 25, 1010, at his residence following a brief illness.
Born on November 26, 1949, in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Berlin and Mary Frances Dobbs. Mr. Dobbs was preceded in death by a son, Benjamin Dobbs.

Paul Allen Compton
Paul Allen Compton, 93, died Friday, August 27, 2010, at St. Mary's Hospice House after an illness following a broken hip.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Chatham Compton, after 62 years of marriage.
Mr. Compton lived at his home in Athens with the help of his caregiver and best friend, Judy Hicks, for the last six years. He had remained active up until his fall and enjoyed life. He wanted all his family, caregiver, friends and former customers to know how much he appreciated them. Life was good for him!
Mr. Compton was born, the oldest of five siblings, in Madison County on October 17, 1916, the son of the late Thomas Norman and Hassie Mae Wood Compton. He completed Comer High School and was his class Valedictorian. He received a scholarship to the University of Georgia, but due to the times, he worked on his family farm and later was drafted into the United States Army where he served his country valiantly in World War II.
Mr. Compton began memberships in the VFW, AMVETS, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 767 and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 790 where he volunteered time, energy and money on all their veterans and charitable projects. He had been recognized as the "Volunteer of the Year" in the Georgia Elks, where his favorite project was the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville, for many years. He was also a "Paul Harris Fellow" of Rotary International. Mr. Compton was co-owner of Compton & Shiver Office Equipment on Baxter Street for 21 years. In addition to the office supply products he was known for sales and service of Electrolux products. He was well known and respected throughout the eight county area his company served. He was an active member of the Lions Club before retiring from business in 1986. Mr. Compton was a devout Christian and active member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church for 60 plus years and had served as a deacon of the church.
Survivors include a son, Allen Norwood Compton (Ashley), their children Babbett Keilar (Scott), Chip Duncan (Jennifer), and grandchildren Gavin Keilar, Alex and Abby Duncan. He is also survived by a daughter, Karen Compton Benton (Tommy), their children Jeff Farrell (Gina), Zach Evans, Thomas Benton, Jr. (Teri), Leigh Ann Benton Weaver and grandchildren Sam Weaver and Thomas Wayne Benton.

Thedral Madeline Morris, 85, of Quiet Oaks Health Care Center, died Saturday, August 28, 2010, following an extended illness.
She was the daughter of the late Hoyt Reece and Ethel McDaris Morris of Hull. Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by a sister, Nadell M. Morris of Augusta; and a very close and beloved family friend of many years, Martha Reames, Albany.
Survivors include sisters, Mary Sue Sluder (Harold), Weaverville, N.C., and Carlene Williams (Elliott), Winterville.; a brother, Elco Morris, Atlanta; eight nieces; five nephews; 32 great-nieces and nephews; and 25 great-great-nieces and nephews.
Growing up in Madison County, she attended the Patterson School and Colbert High School. Following graduation, she attended the University of Georgia and began teaching third and fourth grade in Columbia County at the young age of 19. She also taught high school senior sciences in Winterville from 1946-1948. She went on to attend Florida State University where she received certification as a Social Worker and was employed by the State of Georgia Department of Family and Children Services for 34 years. She was Supervisor of Child Placement in Dougherty County where she retired in 1977 and continued to live in Albany until 2008. Her caring nature and dedication to her family and to family services touched many. She was a very active member in the First Baptist Church of Albany for the entire time that she called Albany her home.
