COLBERT – Phyllis Jean Hymer, 74, died Sunday, February 7, 2010.
A native of Owen County, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Robert L. and Violet Donaldson Hancock. Mrs. Hymer was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer “Abe” Delane Hymer; children, Marleana Hymer and Larry Hymer; sisters, Janice Lyons and Myra Fridley; and a brother, Robert Hancock.
She worked with her husband in their construction and masonry business, was a homemaker and a chef at Southern Cross Restaurant. She was a member of various organizations including the Red Hat Society, Cooking Club, Arbor Day Society, Garden Club, Sassy Sisterhood of Colbert and the Magnolia Belles of Danielsville.
Survivors include eight children, Danny (Susan) Kelley, Joey (April) Kelley, Connie (Lynn) Hassell, Carol (Gary) Bergman, Jimmy Hymer, Ginger Becklehimer, Cindy Thompson, and Elaine Hymer; sister, Roberta Ball; brothers, Arthur Hancock, Terry Hancock, Steve Hancock and Mike Hancock; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; pet, Molly; special pen pal, Joyce Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

Farr (Diana), raised as her own, granddaughter, Ashley Wingate, Atlanta, and great-granddaughter, Dadrianna Bennett, who affectionately called her “Nanna;” another granddaughter, Kimberly Holland, Lexington; sister, Patsy Woodall; and many nieces and nephews.

COMMERCE – Milton Estes Nix Sr., 88, died Thursday, February 4, 2010 at his residence following an extended illness.
Born on September 13, 1921 in Apple Valley, he was the son of the late Dilmus Herbert and Lillian Maley Nix and was educated at Commerce High School. After retirement as vice-president and general manager of A.D. Bolton Chevrolet, he directed the renovation of the Commerce Civic Center and served as its general manager. He was a member for 82 years of the Commerce First United Methodist Church, where he was trustee chairman for 17 years, sang in the choir, a member of the Methodist Men’s S.S. Class and was also a Kiwanis Club member and served with the Commerce Fire Department for 20 years. Mr. Nix was a WWII veteran having served with the United States Navy in the Pacific. He was preceded in death by brothers, Joe, Hal and Herbert Jr.; and a sister, Ruth Nix Crews.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Edith Bolton Nix; sister-in-law, Mrs. Joseph (Eutelle) Nix, Apple Valley; son and daughter-in-law, Milton Nix Jr. (Buddy) and Mackie Nix, Conyers; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Nix and Jim Goodroe, Spartanburg, S.C.; grandchildren, Milton Nix III (Tony), Kennesaw, Natalie Nix Mitchell and her husband, Russell, McKinney, Texas, Lt. A native of Hickory, N.C., Mrs. Ekard was retired from Grinnell Fire Protection. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church where she was very active in the Prime Timers Club and choir. She was a volunteer for the Conyers-Rockdale Council for the Arts, a member of the Red Hat Society, an avid reader and accomplished cook. She loved to travel and especially cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ekard was preceded in death by her husband, Loy W. Ekard Jr. who predeceased her in 2005.
