CORNELIA – John Kenneth Caudell, 76, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009, following an extended illness.
Born in Banks County on July 18, 1933, he was the son of the late Pitner L. and Decie Coker Caudell. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cornelia and a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class. He served his country proudly in the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He also served as an administrative assistant with the Veteran’s Administration with over 30 years of service. Mr. Caudell was preceded in death by sisters, Cora Caudell, Mary Sue Donahue, Bernice Andrews, Doris Comer; and brothers, Oscar Caudell, Hermit Caudell and Louis Caudell.
Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Betty Caudell, Jefferson; sisters and brother-in-law, Christine Ivester, Cornelia, Bonnie and Armond Goza, Tucker; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 1, 2010, at 2 p.m. from the Whitfield Funeral Home with the Rev. David Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Yonah Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the American Legion Post #84, the Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720, and the Rabun County DAV Chapter #15. Mrs. Cotton was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Randy Ramsey; daughter-in-law, Sandreal Cotton; and brothers, Joe and Bryant Vaughn.

He was a graduate of Baldwin High School and was a veteran having served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Line Baptist Church and was a retired poultry and cattle farmer. He was a former board member of the B.J.C. Medical Center Board with 15 years of service and a former member of the Banks County Cattlemen’s Association. Mr. Payne was preceded in death by a brother, Alec Payne.
Survivors include his wife and dedicated companion of 61 years, Lurlene Ward Payne, Hollingsworth Community; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay House and the Rev. Tim House, Gillsville, Kim and Andy Harris, Baldwin; son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Jane Payne, Clarkesville; sister and brother-in-law, Priscilla and Bob Mabrey, Baldwin; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

BANKS COUNTY – Sgt. Jamie Stan Westmoreland, 27, died Sunday, November 29, 2009, at BJC Hospital in Commerce.
Born in Clarke County, he was the son of Wayne Westmoreland of Commerce and Leighan and Paul Montecalvo of Banks County. He served his country through the Army National Guard and enlisted in the United States Army as the sergeant of his own squad in Baghdad for 14 months. He then returned to Ft. Sill, Okla., and trained new soldiers in urban warfare, and recently became a certified firefighter in Banks County and the City of Homer. As stated by his family, “We are all very proud to have had him in our lives.”
Sgt. Westmoreland was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Lt. Branson Westmoreland; and an uncle, Chris Westmoreland.

Survivors in addition to his parents include a son, Austin Westmoreland, Commerce; fiancée, Michelle Spence, Banks County; brothers, Clinton Westmoreland, Travis Cook, Austin Montecalvo and Dylan Montecalvo, all of Banks County, and Ronson Tradd Westmoreland, Watkinsville; paternal grandmother, Eddie Vera Westmoreland, Commerce; uncle, Ronson Westmoreland, Commerce; aunt, Phyllis Farley, Commerce; and cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 4, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home with the Revs. Dana Young and Jason Pritchett officiating. Burial was in the Grey Hill Cemetery.
Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.
