HOSCHTON - Joyce Carter, 73, died, Saturday, July 4, 2009.
She was the daughter of the late Henry and Dora Etheridge Gilliland. She had resided in Barrow County for most of her life and had attended Bethabra Baptist Church. Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Carter.
Survivors include children, Wade Carter, Pendergrass, and Lori Hudson, Hoschton; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Betty Brady, Cornelia; brothers, Quniton Gilliland, Sr., Hoschton, Charlie Gilliland, Talladega, Ala., and Roy Gilliland, Cleveland.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 6, from the Chapel of Carter Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jason Webster officiating. Burial was in Bethabra Baptist Church Cemetery.

CLARKESVILLE - Reverend William “Bill” Womer, Clarkesville, died Sunday, July 5, 2009.
We give thanks and praise to God for Bill’s faith in Jesus Christ his Savior and Lord. Born on December 8, 1937 in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of the late William Clarence Womer and Ida K. Womer.
Bill was baptized into the Christian faith in 1937 and confirmed April 2, 1950 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Philadelphia, Pa. Bill attended Girard College in Philadelphia, PA, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1961. He worked for Concordia Publishing House in St. Louis for nine-and-a-half years, while attending and graduating from Upper Iowa University with a degree in Political Science and Business Administration. He then entered Concordia Theological Seminary in 1979. He was ordained in 1982 at Grace Lutheran Church in Holiday Island/Eureka Springs, Ark., where he had served his year of vicarage in 1981. Bill served two churches during his ministry, Grace Lutheran Church in Ark. from 1981 to 1990 and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gainesville, Ga. from 1991 to 2006. While serving Grace Lutheran Church full time, he served as a mission planner for two other churches, one in Shell Knob, Mo. and one in Berryville, Ark. While serving Good Shepherd he served as a mission planner for Winder, Ga., now known as Arms of Grace and recently worked with the Rev. Roger Schwartz and now the Rev. Peter Grana with the Clarkesville, GA mission.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Womer, Clarkesville; son, Mark Womer, Winder; grandsons, Justin, Tracy and Charles Dylan Womer, all of Winder; and one great-granddaughter, Kayden Danielle Womer, Winder.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 11, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Toccoa, with interment to be at 3 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Peter Grana will officiate. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 10, 2009 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

ROYSTON – Susie Human Brown, 93, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at the Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.
Born in Madison County on February 15, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Seaborn and Dexter Ann (Bessie) Christian Human. She was a seamstress, former member of the Eastern Star, and member of the Mill Shoal Baptist Church, where she was the oldest active member. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Goldman Brown.
Survivors include a son, Paul Brown, Royston; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Born in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Jimmy and Donnie Minish Green.

NICHOLSON – Beverly Dean Pittman, 71, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at Heritage Healthcare of Athens.
Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late David Cecil and Margarite Harris Matthews. She was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church and was retired from Wilkins Industrial. Mrs. Pittman was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Grady Pittman.
Survivors include daughters, Deborah Jarrard, Hull, and Tara Hembree, Nicholson; sons, Phil Pittman, Nicholson, and Matt Pittman, Glasklo, Ky.; a sister, Barbara Hembree, Winterville; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Rodney Swanson
HULL – Rodney M. Swanson, 69, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, following a courageous year-long battle with leukemia.
Born in Escanaba, Mich., he was the son of the late Amber and Clarence Swanson of Skokie, Ill., and the husband of Patricia Sheridan Swanson. He was raised in Skokie. Ill., and was a graduate of Colorado State in Durango, with a degree in agri-business. His lifelong love affair with horses and hounds that began in his teens in the Chicago area became a long and distinguished career as a Professional Huntsman with organized foxhunting clubs in Texas, New Mexico, Illinois, South Carolina, and Georgia.
Prior to his retirement last year, Swanson served as Professional Huntsman for Shakerag Hounds for 20 years, overseeing all hunt and breeding activities for the club. He came to Shakerag from Charleston, S.C., where he served as Professional Huntsman for Middleton Place Hounds for 15 years.
For more than 10 years, he was Master of his own private pack of foxhounds, Grandfather Mountain Hounds, of Linville, N.C. Since 2007, he was also Master of his own private beagle pack, Nowhere Farm Foot Hounds, Hull.
Swanson was a member of the American Foxhound Association, the Master of Fox Hounds Association, and sat on the board of directors of the Madison County-Oglethorpe Animal Shelter. He was also a breeder of Belted Galloway Cattle and a member of the Belted Galloway Society, as well as the Georgia Cattlemen’s Association.
He was an avid bird-hunter, and since his retirement was actively involved in training birddogs. Swanson was a member of Quail Unlimited.
Along with his professional duties at both Shakerag and Middleton, “Mr. Rod” was devoted to educating and mentoring children and teens interested in riding and hunt-related activities, including junior and children’s hunt programs. For many years, he also served as horsemanship instructor at summer camp programs he developed in North Carolina and New Mexico.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the American Cancer Society, or the Madison County Food Bank.

HULL – Frances Brown Bond, 96, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, just shy of her 97th birthday.
Born in Hull, she was the daughter of the late John Glenn and Carrie Holcomb Brown. She was a homemaker for many years and then transitioned to the working world during the middle of her life. She was first employed by Coca Cola Bottling Company in Americus, before moving back to North
Georgia and settling at Smith Boley Brown, Inc., where she worked until her retirement after 45 years with the company. She was a lifelong member of Hull Baptist Church and first attended Hull Baptist as an infant, where her mother would lay her under a pew to sleep during services. A lifetime resident of Hull, she lived on Glenn-Carrie Road, which was named after her mother and father. After living a full life, she left many happy memories for her family and friends, including an article that appeared in The Madison County Journal that captured what she loved to talk about the most. In the article “A Century of Change,” she was interviewed along with her sister, Lois Brown Aiken, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, about their childhood and how the world has changed. Mrs. Bond’s greatest loves were her church and her family.
Mrs. Bond was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle H. Bond Sr., an infant son; brothers, Paul Brown, Coile Brown, Curtis Brown, James Brown; and a sister, Ollie Brown Patton.
Survivors include a son, David H. Bond Jr. (Sharon); daughters, Carolyn Bond Howell (Buzz), and Joan Bond; sister, Lois Brown Aiken; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, with another due in August; and one great-great-grandchild. Her youngest daughter, Joan, was her caretaker for many years.

ROYSTON – Ora Estelle Parten, 94, died Thursday, July 2, 2009, at her residence.
Born in Franklin County on August 31, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Obediah and Nellie Carey Parten. She was retired from Chicopee in Royston and was of the Methodist denomination. Miss Parten was preceded in death by brothers, Archie, Jim, Harold, and John Parten; and sisters, Mertha Parten, Emma Lou Fortson and Mattie Lee Smith.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.
