COMER – James Polk Gholston, 93, died Friday, April 17, 2009, at his residence.
A native of Comer, he was the son of the late James and Mattie Bell Gholston. He was a member of Comer Baptist Church and was a graduate of Riverside Military Academy. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Eula Adams Gholston, Comer; step children, David (Karen) Alton, Anne (Steve) Hochwalt; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 2o, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral home with the Rev. Rodney Owens officiating. Burial was private.

Born in Franklin County on June 13, 1918, he was the son of the late Lester and Ida Bennett Baskins. He was a contractor in the construction industry, drove a school bus for 15 years for the Franklin County School System, and was a member of the Canon United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher for many years. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army as a combat engineer during World War II, and he was a member of the Harrison McCreary V.F.W. Post #4828. Mr. Baskins was preceded in death by brothers, Troy, Leonard, J.C., Ellis and Ralph Baskins; and a sister, Nellie Outz.

Born in Fort Benning, he was the son of Clifford Clyde Cook, step son to Patricia Cook, and son of the late Leopoldine Koppel Cook. He was a member of Colbert Baptist Church. He was a very caring, giving and generous person, and loved fishing, loved ones stated.

ATHENS – Mary Emma Compton, 84, died Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens.
A native of Athens, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Mary Verona Morgan Williams. She was retired from advertising at The Athens Banner Herald and was a member of Crooked Creek Baptist Church.
