Born in Jackson County, he was the son of Connie Lynn and stepfather, Mike Lynn, and the late David Hall. He was a 2003 graduate of Jefferson High School, owner of XXX Fencing Company, and a member of New Beginnings Pentecostal Outreach. Mr. Nix was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ronnie Nix; and grandmother, Sara Phillips.

Born in Baldwin County, she was the daughter of the late Nellie Snow and John Lee Eubanks. She lived in Milledgeville, where she worked as a real estate agent in both Baldwin and Putnam counties. After her marriage, she and her husband resided in Putnam County, where she was a member of Harvest Baptist Church. They relocated to Jefferson four years ago. Mrs. Avant was preceded in death by three sisters; and two brothers.

He was employed with the U.S. Postal Service for a brief period of time; afterwards he worked with Rogers Brothers Construction and Connie’s Wholesale Flowers. In 1989 he opened 4 A Auto Service, which he operated for a number of years. He was a member of White Creek Baptist Church, where he served on the deacon board and a veteran having served in the United States Air Force as a tail gunner on the B52 bomber. Mr. Totherow was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Hulsey Totherow; children, David Totherow, Felicia Totherow and Ruth Totherow; sisters, Pauline Payne and Elda Davis; and a brother, Charles Totherow.

ATHENS – John David Parks, 71, died Saturday, March 28, 2009.
Born on September 27, 1917, in Banks County, he was the son of Ernest G. and Minnie D. Parks. He came to Athens in 1938 as an employee of Rodgers Hosiery Mill and later worked with Normal Hardware Company prior to his ownership of Handy Variety Hardware Company, retiring from the hardware business in 1980. He was a longtime member of the Prince Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, was active in Sunday School, youth programs and brotherhood, and was church treasurer for many years. Mr. Parks was a veteran, having served in the United States Army’s 29th Infantry Division, from Normandy, France to Julich, Germany. He served in the four major battle campaigns for Northern Europe and was the recipient of the Bronze Star and was twice awarded the Purple Heart for combat wounds. He was a member of the Athens Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and worked with the effort to create a US postage stamp in honor of the Purple Heart medal. In addition, he was a contributor to the construction of the Purple Heart Memorial at Athens Memorial Park.
