WINDER – Bill Ward, 84, died Thursday, January 29, 2009.
A native of Clay County, Ala., he was the son of the late Ulyses and Annie Lee Bunn Ward. He was a retired automobile mechanic and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Ward was preceded in death by sons, Bobby, James and Raymond Ward; and a granddaughter, Jamie Leigh Ward.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Harris Ward; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Tawana Ward; daughter-in-law, Joanne Ward; grandchildren, Melissa Harp, Chasity Wall and Jessica Riden, all of Winder, Christy Dennis, Alabama; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Elizabeth Scott and Shirley Bramlett, both of Winder, Alice Gabriel, South Carolina; brother, George Ward, Jefferson; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 31, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with the Revs. Terry Brock and Roger Hardy officiating. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

TALMO – George Toney Thomas Sr., 82, formerly of Walnut Grove and Barrow County, died Monday, January 26, 2009.
A native of Oconee County, he was the son of the late Llyod and Gladys Prickett Thomas. He was a retired truck driver with DeKalb County and was a member of Gum Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee Thomas.

Myron Gilliland
BUFORD – Myron E. Gilliland, 86, died Wednesday, January 28, 2009.
Born on March 3, 1922, he was the son of the late Lake and Minnie Gilliland of Jackson County. He married Latrelle Thurmond on February 10, 1945, and moved to the Buford area, where he lived the remainder of his life. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Buford, a former Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. Mr. Gilliland was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtie Jones, Gainesville; and son-in-law, Robert Brown, Buford.
As one of the last living workers of the Bona Allen “harness shop”, his name is engraved on a statue of Roy Rogers, Trigger and Jack Johnson, located in historic Buford, commemorating the saddle made for Trigger by the Bona Allen Company in the late 1940s. He then went to work for General Motors at the Doraville assembly plant, where he was a member of UAW Local 10, and retired in 1980, after 32 years of service.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 64 years, Latrelle Thurmond Gilliland, Buford; daughters and sons-in-law, Joan Brown, Flowery Branch, Martha Jo and Ronald Martin, Canon, Judy and Jerry Parks, Buford; sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Janice Gilliland and Ronny and Joan Gilliland, all of Buford; a brother, Paul Gilliland, Buford; sisters, Nell Heard and Ola Adams, both of Buford; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

WINDER - Royal Wilson Hardegree, 90, died Sunday, January 25, 2009.
A native and lifelong resident of Barrow County, he was the son of the late Callous and Nellie Wilson Hardegree. He was a Marine Corp veteran of World War II, a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons for over 26 years, and Sunday School teacher for over 50 years. Mr. Hardegree was a retired supervisor at Carwood Manufacturing Company with forty-seven years of service. He will be remembered by all whose lives he touched as a strong, quiet man with a quick wit, a firm handshake and an unfailing love for family, friends, God and Country, loved ones stated. Mr. Hardegree was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Margaret Daniel Hardegree.

WINDER - June ‘Momma’ Murphy, 63, died Thursday, January 22, 2009.
Born in Columbus, she was the daughter of the late Gene Sanders and Juanita Moon Pope. She had worked as a lab technician at George H. Lanier Hospital and at Lab Corp, and was a manager at Smith Kline.
Survivors include her husband, Doug Murphy, Winder; daughters, Angela Hayes, Gainesville, Rhonda Meadows, DeVille, Ala., Melissa White, Roswell, and Tandi Murphy Hall, Athens, seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brother, Larry Pope, Valley, Ala.

‘Red’ Hitchcock
WINDER – David L. “Red” Hitchcock Jr., 83, died Tuesday, January 20, 2009, following a battle with cancer.
He was the son of the late David L. and Maude Hays Hitchcock. He attended the University of Georgia, earning his specialist degree in education administration. During his career he worked as a teacher and coach in Walton County, teacher, coach and principal in the Jackson County School System, principal and personnel director in Gwinnett County, then superintendent of the Barrow County School System until his retirement in 1980. Over his 33 years of service, he was honored with many awards and accomplishments to include Georgia Athletic Association Coach of the Year 1960-62, Chairman of the Northeast Georgia Cesa 1979-80, Barrow County Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year, president of Barrow County Retired Teachers 1984. He was a member of the Winder First United Methodist Church and was a veteran, having served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II before entering his career as an educator. Mr. Hitchcock was preceded in death by a daughter, Sara F. Hitchcock.

She was a member of Hebron Christian Church, and was retired from Empire Manufacturing after 30 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse M. Evans; and sisters, Hortense Rogers and Marjorie Cronic. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved flowers, gardening, and her most loved and important job was a homemaker, loving and taking care of her family, loved ones stated.

A native of Barrow County and former resident of Decatur, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Beulah Bryant Hughey. She was a retiree of Emory University Hospital, where she worked in the business office and she was Baptist. Mrs. Price was preceded in death by her husband, Roy L. Price.
