ELBERTON – James “Jake” Thomas Conwell, 82, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at the Elbert County Memorial Hospital.
A native of Madison County, he was the son of the late Alvin and Ruby Mae Lord Conwell. He was a member and deacon of Doves Creek Baptist Church, a United States Army veteran serving in World War II, and owner and operator of Jake’s Custom Crafts. Mr. Conwell was preceded in death by a brother, Dallas Conwell; and sister, Ollie Mae Poss.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Baggett Conwell; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Sherry Conwell, Ila, Larry and Pat Conwell, Monroe; daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Steve Baughcum, Lexington, N.C.; sister, Louise Conwell Sims, Bogart; step-children, John and Martha Baggett, Woodruff, S.C., and Connie and Stan Morse, Watkinsville; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 30, at Doves Creek Baptist Church with Marshall Tribble, and the Revs. Ray Jenkins and Douglas Huff officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. DANIELSVILLE – Woodrow Wilson “W.W.” Culbertson, 90, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009.
A native and lifelong resident of Madison County, he was the son of the late Tom and Lettie Jane Fitzpatrick Culbertson. He was the last survivor of eleven siblings.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Elaine Culbertson, Danielsville; granddaughter and spouse, Sherri and Greg Sutton, Dalton; great-grandchildren, Christa and Caitlyn.

Born in Barrow County, he was the son of the late James Truman and Cora Maudeen Jackson Casper. He was the manager of the Magnolia Station in Athens for a number of years.

DANIELSVILLE - Okel Dawson, honored World War II Veteran, died peacefully in his sleep at home in Danielsville on Monday, December 29, 2008, of service related causes.
He was 90 years old and happy to spend Christmas with his wife, Gennis Dawson; son, Kerry Dawson, daughter, Marsha Richmond; grandchildren, Danielle Nelson, Jared Dawson and Conor Dawson; great-grandchildren Skyler, Dawson and Taylor Nelson; and a great-grandchild due next summer to Jared and Carla (Piazza) Dawson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Iva Dawson, as well as sisters, Virginia Westfall and Wanda Dawson. He was born in Upshur County, W. Va. Mr. Dawson joined the US Navy in 1939 and served on the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown helping in supplying wartime Britain. After Pearl Harbor, he went to the Pacific on the USS Cimarron where he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer. Chief Dawson participated in the Halsey-Doolittle, Wake Island and Truk Island Raids, as well as the Guadacanal-Tulagi Landings, the New Georgia Occupation and the Battle of Midway. He also served in the Gilbert, Marshall, Marianna and Palau Operations. On May 15, 1996, he was honored at the Pentagon with a naval citation for service on the Doolittle Raid over Tokyo in April of 1942. After the war, Okel and Gennis Dawson were married in Ohio where he began machine work before the family moved to Homestead, Fla.
Over more than thirty years, Mr. Dawson worked at Homestead Air Force Base, Aerojet General (space program), and retired from International Paper Corporation. After retirement, he worked part time for Southern Packaging until Hurricane Andrew in 1992 caused a move near family in Watkinsville. Gennis continues to reside in Danielsville, attending the Danielsville United Methodist Church, while her great-grandchildren attend public schools in Madison County.
Okel and Gennis Dawson were married for 63 years. He was a dear father and grandfather, a great friend known for gentle ways and entertaining conversation, and a valued colleague who will be missed, loved ones stated.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 24, 2009, at the Union Methodist Church in Upshur County, W. Va., with burial in the adjacent Mount Union Cemetery.

ROYSTON – Fay Holland, 96, formerly of Bowersville, died Thursday, January 22, 2009, at the Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.
Born on October 9, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin M. and Electa Walters Holland. Miss Holland was a retired educator with the Franklin County School System for 38 years, with 35 years in the Lavonia Elementary School. She was a member of the Franklin County Retired Educator Association, member of N.R.T.A., and former member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She was a member of the Bowersville Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years, and was a member of the W.M.U. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include nephews, Ben Johnson, Deland, Tenn., Dale Holland, Chapin, S.C., and Jack Holland, Grayson; nieces, Mary Sue Shumolis, Canton, N.C., Betty H. Jackson, LaGrange, Jean Keenan, Shelby, N.C.; and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.

COMER - Fred Watson Compton, 87, died Wednesday, January 21, 2009, surrounded by his loved ones in the home in which he was born.
Born in Madison County, he was the son of the late Webster G. “Boss” Compton and Mazelle Lord Compton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Dobbs Compton; brothers, Rabun Compton, Rufus Compton; sisters, Glennie Wood, Grace Threlkeld; daughter-in-law: Rhonda Compton. He was retired after 34 years of service with Transcontinental Pipeline Company, was an active lifetime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, and was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and his passion was farming the land in which he grew up as a child, loved ones stated.

ROYSTON - Frances "Nan" Scarboro Forester, 79, died Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at her residence, following an extended illness.
Born in Franklin County on September 23, 1929, she was the daughter of the late James Oscar and Mary Moon Scarboro. She worked as a seamstress in the garment industry in Royston and Carnesville during the 1950s and 1960s, and worked at home as a daycare provider for many children during the 1970's. She retired from Life Springs Resources (formerly Advocate Press) after 10 years of service. The love and care she gave to everyone she encountered made a great impact on countless lives, loved ones added. She will be greatly missed. Mrs. Forester was a member of the Peniel Pentecostal Holiness Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Forester; grandson, Keith Smith; brothers, O.B. Scarboro, Eldridge Scarboro and Jimmy Scarborough; and a sister, Blondine Settlemyre.

MADISON - James Simmons, Jr., 77, died Saturday, January 17, 2009.
A native of Fairmount, he was a son of the late Mary McCallum and James Thomas Simmons, Sr., and was preceded in death by a brother, Maurice Simmons.
In 1961, he began working at Athens Seed Company and continued until 1978, at which time he became co-owner. Until the time of his death, Mr. Simmons continued to work at Athens Seed Lawn and Garden in Watkinsville. He proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Simmons; children, Heather Simmons, Greshamville, James Thomas Simmons, III and wife, Carol, Carlton; brother, John Simmons, Commerce,; sister, Esther Ruth Simmons, Smyrna; grandson, James Thomas Simmons, IV; great-grandson, James Thomas Simmons, V; and longtime business partner, James Willis.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 19, at the chapel of Lord and Stephens, WEST, with the Rev. Wayne Powers and Dr. Sammy Simmons officiating. Burial will be private. Employees of Athens Seed Company served as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
Memorials contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Hospice or Georgia Seedsman Association.
Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, WEST, Bogart, was in charge of arrangements.
