Ruth Naomi Turpen, 85, of Hoschton, formerly of Lawrenceville, died Thursday, May 22, 2008, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, following a sudden illness.
She was a native of the New Holland Community and was the daughter of the late William Sargent and Naomi Jones Sargent. She was retired from the Gwinnett County School System and was Methodist. Mrs. Turpen was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph T. Turpen; a son, Tommy Turpen; brothers, Bobby Sargent, D.W. Sargent and Fulton Sargent; sisters, Mayrelle Lancaster, Irene Massey and Imogene Sargent.
Survivors include children, John B. Turpen, Hoschton, Edith Ostrye, Murrayville, Lola Dodd and Douglas Turpen, both of Lawrenceville; grandchildren, Suzanne, Oliver, Al, Joseph and Teela; great-grandchildren, Tatum, Brock and Mack; sisters, Edith Seabolt, Ballground, and Macie Crain, Murphy, N.C.; brother, Raymond Sargent, Gainesville; and several nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.

Hazel Frances Cook, 89, of Winder, died Monday, May 26, 2008.
She was born in Jackson County and was the daughter of the late Cleve and Annie Lee Baird Forrester. She was a member of Winder First Baptist Church and was from retired Griffin Campus of the University of Georgia as a secretary. Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest B. Cook; and a son, Ernest Terry Cook; and a sister, Doris Forrester.
Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Louise Forrester, Winder.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 28, at Smith Memory Chapel with the Rev. Lester Hall and Dr. John Talley officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.

Jack Richard Townsend, 79, of Athens, died Saturday, May 17, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospice House.
Born in Spruce Pine, N.C., he was the son of the late Colonel Calvin Townsend and Janie King Townsend and was Methodist. A resident of Athens since 1975, he was the owner and operator of BET-Townsend Hearing Aids, traveling into numerous areas with his business. He was a graduate of Akron University, Life Time member of the Athens Lions Club, Georgia Associating for Hearing Care Professionals, where he served as president and vice president. Also, he was a member of VFW Post #2872, Athens Chamber of Commerce, and the Georgia Federation for Independent Businessmen. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Air Force during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Townsend was preceded in death by wives, Julene Townsend and Barbara Edenfield Townsend.
Survivors include children, Colleen Lewis, Oxford, Glen Townsend, Monticello, Bruce Townsend, Jackson, Rick Townsend, Baxley; sister, Wilma Pritchard, Marion, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his loving cat Katie.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 22, at 11 a.m., at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville, with military honors accorded and the Rev. Will Lewis officiating.

Charlie Fred Parham, 85, of Comer, died Saturday, May 17, 2008.
He was born on March 19, 1923, the son of the late Shelby Parham and Allie Mae Wood, and was a member of Meadow Baptist Church. Mr. Parham was preceded in death by a stepson, John David Booth.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Parham; daughter and son-in-law, Lydia and Wayne Chandler; grandchildren, Colton Chandler, Camille Chandler and Colby Chandler.

Agnes Davison Ray, 82, of Royston, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at her residence.
She was born in Franklin County on August 2, 1925, the daughter of the late Frank Harbin Sr. and Tee Jacks Harbin. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elberton and served on the outreach committee, the Women of Evangelism Church Committee and as chairman of the Communion Committee. She was also a member of the Elberton Civic League, the Elberton Historic Society, Elberton Baptist Church S.A.M.S. Club, the Friendship Club of the Elberton First United Methodist Church, and the Elberton Elk’s Club. While living in Royston, she was a former Girl Scout Leader, former Boy Scout Den Mother, and was a member of the Royston Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, leader of the G.A.’s, and director of Vacation Bible School. In 1966, she was awarded Homemaker of the Year in Franklin County. Mrs. Ray was preceded in death by husbands, John Rolland Davison, and Henry Doyle Ray; a grandson, Brad Chapman; and sister, Mary Fain.

He loved fishing, Nascar Racing, football and writing poetry. His favorite thing was racing grandsons to the mail box and back, loved ones stated.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Dale, Maysville; a son, Steve Dale, Commerce; daughters, Cynthia Bradburn, Flowery Branch, Crystal Hughes, Jefferson; brother, Bobby B. Dale, Maysville; sister, Lethia Pethel, Gainesville; grandchildren, Parker, Clayton and Abigail Hughes, Avery, Thomas, Anna and Jonathan Dale, Isaiah Stephenson, Dawson and Kaylah Paige Bradburn; and a special little friend, Isabella Smith.

She was born on September 20,1911, in Jackson County, the daughter of the late Thomas Coy and Hettie Moss Short. She was the oldest female member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where she had been a member since joining at age 11. She was a retired Seamstress from Commerce Sportswear and Oxford. Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Brown Wood; and a sister, Ada Fay Webb.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Barbara and Raymond Adams, Chamblee, and Marie and Wendell Perry, Gainesville, Carolyn Hayes, Sautee-Nacoochee; sister, Jane Short Irvin, Gillsville; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
