Thomas Watson Souther, 90, of New Horizons Nursing Home, Gainesville, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, following an extended illness.
He was born in Union County, the son of the late Rev. Jasper Gilliam Souther and Stella Ruth Watkins Souther. He was retired from Chicopee and was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Mae McIntyre Souther; brothers, Aaron, Isaiah, Oliver, Arvil and John Souther; sisters, Ulmer Dyer, Willie Turpin and Frankie Cowart. He was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Gainesville and was also a charter member of East Hall Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Roger Allen, Gainesville, Delores Edge, Flowery Branch, and Frances and Ronnie Spain, Cleveland; son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Lois Souther, Gainesville; grandchildren and spouses, Phil and Jan Strickland, Tim and Theresa Strickland, all of Gainesville, David and Catherine Strickland, Scotty and Nancy Souther, all of Lula, Brian and Sonya Souther, Kevin Spain, Christy and Keith Sutton, all of Cleveland, Shaun Edge, Flowery Branch; great-grandchildren, Madison Strickland, Joshua Souther, Ethan Edge, Bo Souther and Briana Sutton; sister, Mary Hart, Gainesville; brothers, Paul Souther, Cleveland, and L.D. Margaret Mathis, 82, of Winder, died Monday, May 19, 2008.
She was born in Barrow County, the daughter of the late Hiram S. and Stella Edwards McDaniel. Her first job was at Carwood Manufacturing Company and she retired from Cherokee after many years. She was a member of Dove Creek Holiness Church. Mrs. Mathis was preceded in death by her husband, Jerdine L. Mathis.

She was a retiree of the Barrow County School System, where she served as a lunchroom manager. She was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church. Mrs. Maddox was preceded in death by her husband, L.C. “Doc” Maddox.
Survivors include children, David Maddox, Winder, and Cynthia Reed, Alpharetta; grandchildren, Chastain Reed, John David Reed, Nathan Reed and Andrea Reed, all of Alpharetta.

Born in Daytona Beach, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Pete and Pearl Dunahoo Usry. She was a member of Rockwell Universalist Church and was a retired fiscal budget analyst with the Centers for Disease Control. Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Wood Sr.

Mary Evelyn Garrett Huff, 93, of Snellville, died.
She was born on April 6, 1913, in Oconee County, one of eight farm children born during the depression. She graduated from Athens Normal School and University of Georgia, with a bachelor of science in education, the first of the family to graduate college. Mrs. Huff was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, COL William S. Huff. Before and during her military years with her husband, she taught school, including a mountain Georgia country school and in Virginia. She finished her teaching career in Gwinnett County after her husband retired from military service.
Survivors include a brother, Dick Garrett, Statham; sister, Claire McDougald, Statham; sons, COL William S. Huff II, LTC Charles M. Huff, and Jim H. Huff; daughters-in-law, COL Lisa MacGuire and Cheri Huff; grandchildren, Elizabeth Goodwin and spouse, Wayne, Tiffany, Brittany, Sean and Michelle Huff; one great-grandchild, William Goodwin.
