ATHENS – Charles W. Hawkins, 76, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009.
Born in Talmo, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Ezelle Hawkins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Occupation force in Germany during World War II. After the war he became a well known auto salesman in the Athens area. He was a member and past Post Commander of the VFW Post 2872, a Mason, and a member and deacon of Attica Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Susan Gibson Hawkins; sons, Charles W. “Chuck” Hawkins III and William Aubrey Hawkins; sister, Faye Marcus; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 1, at 11 a.m., at Attica Baptist Church with the Revs. Kevin Purcell and Shane Moore officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, July 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be John Dills, Autie Gibson, Randy Marcus, Dean Archer, Steve Coker and Dwight Marcus. Members of the VFW Post 2872 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
