Charlene Strickland

ATHENS – Charlene Broome Strickland, 88, died Sunday, July 12, 2009.

Born on July 9, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Susan Broome. She was an economics teacher for 31 years before retiring, having taught many of those years at Madison County High School. She was of the Baptist denomination and a member of Danielsville Baptist Church. Mrs. Strickland was preceded in death by her husband, James Howard Strickland.

Survivors include sisters, Jimmie Lou Benton, Jacksonville, Fla., Willie Ruth Freeman, Lincolnton; a niece, Linda Gennerich; two nephews; two great-nephews; David and Bowen Freeman.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 18, at 2 p.m., at Danielsville Baptist Church. Burial will be in Danielsville City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bob Fogg, Barry Smith, David Freeman, Ben Black, Bowen Freeman and Gary Gennerich. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, July 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, is in charge of arrangements.

I'm very sad to lose my aunt Charlene. I enjoyed her so much. We'd have such good times talking about things and laughing with my mother, sister, another aunt and a time or two with her own two sisters. It reminded me a little of a gathering of women in a "chick movie"..with different generations bonding and having a good time. I will miss you dearly, Charlene. I hope you know that I loved you very much.

Sad to hear of Ms Charlene's passing. She was my home ec teacher for several years & she taught me so much. She was truly a mentor for a whole generation of young women & a respected & admired community leader.

I too am very sad about my aunt Charlene's death...I will always remember her for many different reasons one of them being she directed my first wedding...She was extremely talented and smart...I haven't seen her in several years but I always looked forward to our annual Christmas card exchanges...We kinda kept up with one another that way..I deeply regret not being able to come to the viewing or to the funeral but my husband is very ill and is in a nursing home and I am dealing with numberous health problems that limits my outside activities...To Willie and Jimmie, my heartfelt sympathy to you and I know that she is in a better place...May God bless you and Aunt Charlene as well....I too am one of the other nieces...All my love...Debbie

Oh my gosh, how I loved Mrs. Strickland. How she made us laugh! She was such a hoot as our home ec teacher! It was Mrs. Strickland that taught me how to sew and I've carried that with me for a lifetime. I'm always sewing something! Often times she taught me how to be a lady (even though I was 17 at the time). She was the first person outside of my family that had the patience to teach me how to cook and how to set a table. We were graced by her presence at our 30th or 35th Class Reunion. She hadn't changed a bit. If there's anything I wish I had done was to have written her and told her what a difference she made in my life! I did that with Mrs.Nelms, our typing teacher, a year before she died. It was the only letter she had ever received thanking her for the contributions she had made to a child/student's life. She told me she often re-read it to KNOW that at least one child had grown...that she HAD made a difference. I learned this through Dr Chuck Swindoll.....a pastor....from Insight for Living on the radio.
I KNOW she blessed most everyone that was allowed to be in her life. I hope that many "children" had the opportunity to spend some of their lives with her.
