CLARKESVILLE - Reverend William “Bill” Womer, Clarkesville, died Sunday, July 5, 2009.
We give thanks and praise to God for Bill’s faith in Jesus Christ his Savior and Lord. Born on December 8, 1937 in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of the late William Clarence Womer and Ida K. Womer.
Bill was baptized into the Christian faith in 1937 and confirmed April 2, 1950 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Philadelphia, Pa. Bill attended Girard College in Philadelphia, PA, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1961. He worked for Concordia Publishing House in St. Louis for nine-and-a-half years, while attending and graduating from Upper Iowa University with a degree in Political Science and Business Administration. He then entered Concordia Theological Seminary in 1979. He was ordained in 1982 at Grace Lutheran Church in Holiday Island/Eureka Springs, Ark., where he had served his year of vicarage in 1981. Bill served two churches during his ministry, Grace Lutheran Church in Ark. from 1981 to 1990 and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gainesville, Ga. from 1991 to 2006. While serving Grace Lutheran Church full time, he served as a mission planner for two other churches, one in Shell Knob, Mo. and one in Berryville, Ark. While serving Good Shepherd he served as a mission planner for Winder, Ga., now known as Arms of Grace and recently worked with the Rev. Roger Schwartz and now the Rev. Peter Grana with the Clarkesville, GA mission.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Womer, Clarkesville; son, Mark Womer, Winder; grandsons, Justin, Tracy and Charles Dylan Womer, all of Winder; and one great-granddaughter, Kayden Danielle Womer, Winder.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 11, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Toccoa, with interment to be at 3 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Peter Grana will officiate. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 10, 2009 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
May our loving and merciful Lord, by his grace, comfort the family with the assurance of the resurrection from the dead of all those who like Bill, fall asleep in Jesus Christ.
The family requests that memorials for Pastor Bill be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Post Office Box 1154, Toccoa, GA 30577.
Memorial Park Funeral Home, Gainesville, is in charge of arrangements.
