JEFFERSON – Helen M. Smith, 87, died Friday, July 3, 2009, at her residence.
Born in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late John and Ophelia Stevenson McConnell. She was a member of Apple Valley Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Herald Smith; three brothers, Gene, Mack and Roger McConnell; and a sister, Rea Harris.
Survivors include two sons, James Smith, Monroe, N.C., and Horace Smith, Hull; two daughters, Frances Grier, Flowery Branch, and Marie Williams, Dunwoody; one sister, Mary Sewell, Carnesville; two sisters-in-law, Mary Adams, Commerce, and Lucille Smith, Nicholson; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 5, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Lee Hunter and Chaplain Bill Hayes officiating. Burial followed in the Rogers Baptist Church Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.
