BALDWIN - Mary Elizabeth Carey, 81, died Sunday, May 31, 2009, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, following an extended illness.
She was born on August 30, 1927, in Habersham County, the daughter of the late John and Lavonia Mullinax Armstrong. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Carey; a son, Ray Carey; brother, John B. Armstrong; and sister, Oma Lee Armstrong. She was retired from the apparel industry and attended the Bethesda Fellowship Church.
Survivors include daughters, Sara Jo Whitehead and Shirley Etris, both of Nicholson, Faye Carey, Baldwin, Patsy McGill, Commerce; son, Ansel Carey, Baldwin; sisters, Flossie Dooley, Cornelia, Cleo Pealor, Sharpsburg; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Dan and Wanda Chitwood.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, from the Whitfield Funeral Home with the Revs. Clarence Reynolds and Paris Whitworth officiating. Burial will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 9 p.m. on Monday, June 1.
