LAVONIA – Pastor Winfred Pointer, 71, died Saturday, May 9, 2009, at his residence.
Born on September 22, 1937, in Haralson County, he was the son of the late Elihue and Jessie Mae (Brooks) Pointer. He was a painter by trade and was previously a police officer in Polk County, Fla., for many years. He was pastor of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lavonia. Mr. Pointer was preceded in death by children, twins, Winfred Lee Pointer and Penny Jane Pointer, and Donna Denise Pointer.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Standridge Pointer; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Joyce Pointer, Lavonia, Bobby and Jane Pointer, Martin; daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Jerry Watkins, Gail and Ronnie Corbitt, Kathi Witlock, all of Lavonia, and Karee and Bryan Bullock, Jefferson; brother, Chester Pointer, Auburndale, Fla.; sisters, Lilian Coggins, Auburndale, Fla., and Gracy Steele, Ft. Payne, Ala.; 22 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 11, at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home with the Rev. Lee Pointer officiating. Burial was at Franklin Memorial Gardens-North.
