GREENWOOD – Joe Thomas Dixon, 88, died Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Hospice House.
Born in Elbert County on October 16, 1920, he was the son of the late John Henry and Drucie Lunsford Dixon. He was retired from Greenwood Mills, Plant #5, where he was a member of the Greenwood Mills Quarter Century Club, and was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member and former deacon of Beulah Baptist Church and was a member of the Men’s Bible Class. Mr. Dixon was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Dixon; and sisters, L.E. Coile, Jeanette Coile, Geneva Martin, Bessie Ruth Simmons and Virginia Dixon.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Gail D. and Wayne Sartin, Greenwood; grandchildren, Jennifer Dixon and Danielle Sartin, both of Greenwood, Lesley Creswell, Sneads Ferry, N.C., and Angela Still, Barnwell; brothers, Darris Dixon, Frank Dixon, Junior Dixon, Gene Arnold Dixon, all of Comer, Glenn Dixon, Elberton, John Dixon and Wilburn Dixon, both of Greenwood; daughter-in-law, Mary Turner Dixon, Greenwood; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 11, at Beulah Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Wiggins officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Charles O’Quinn, Tim Still, Ricky Dunn, Brandon Howard, Matthew Creswell and Ken Campbell. Honorary escort was Dr. Robert Dodd, Eddie Brown, Robert Arnette and Dr. Ed Fowler.
