ATHENS – Charles Lokey Wheeler Sr., 80, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009.
Born on August 9, 1928, in Warrenton, he was the son of the late Joseph Washington and Lucille Lokey Wheeler. He was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church, an ordained deacon, and retired from Athens First Bank and Trust as a commercial loan officer. Mr. Wheeler was preceded in death by brothers, Walter Donald Wheeler and Anthony Gheesling Wheeler. He graduated from Thomson High School and entered the United States Navy in 1946. He graduated from Presbyterian College in 1951 with an AB in economics.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Whitehead Wheeler; sons, Charles Lokey Wheeler Jr. and Vicki H. Wheeler, Lawrenceville, William Warren and Ellen B. Wheeler, Toccoa, and Benjamin Whitehead and Natalie O. Wheeler, Statham; grandchildren, Christopher Charles Wheeler, Ashlie Elizabeth Wheeler, Meghan Hilton Wheeler, Bradley Benjamin Wheeler, William Landrum Wheeler, Mary Lovett Wheeler and Charles Bowen Wheeler; brother and sister-in-law, Joseph Washington Wheeler Jr. and Ludelle Wheeler, Evans; sisters-in-law, Barbara Wilmont Wheeler, Rocky Hill, Conn., Hazel Whitehead Ivey, Bogart, and Martha Whitehead Faw, Athens.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 2, at Mars Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Jones, Ray Austin and Dr. Jim Griffith officiating. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Joy Sunday School Class of Mars Hill Baptist Church. Private entombment was held at Evergreen Memorial Park.
