GILLSVILLE – Walter Eugene Broom, 74, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, following an extended illness.
Born on March 1, 1935, in Hall County, he was the son of the late Emory Broom Sr. and Evalon Smith Broom. He was retired from the State of South Carolina School System, a member of Forrest Acre #410 Masonic Lodge in South Carolina, and a member of Springway Baptist Church. Mr. Broom was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a Sergeant First Class. He was preceded in death by brothers, Bennie Broom, Mark Broom, Elmer Broom and Jerry Broom; and a sister, Bessie Broom Newberry.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Cruce Broom, Gillsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Diane Broom, Columbia, S.C., Marco and Angelia Broom, Elgin, S.C., Bobby Cruce Jr. and Joy Cruce and Edward and Amy Cruce, all of Gainesville; brothers, J.C. Broome, Danielsville, Emory Broome Jr. and Ethel Broom, Gainesville, Luther and Anna Broom, Murrayville; sisters, Kattie Cochran, Martha and Alvin Loggins, Lila and Doug Gaines, Louise Thompson Maldanado, all of Gainesville; grandchildren, Austin Broom, Cameron Broom, Jake Broom, Kirsten Broom, Justin Cruce, Joseph Cruce, Ryan Meadows and Sam Meadows; great-grandchild, Brandon Reece Dukes; brother-in-law, Winston Gaines, Gillsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 28, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with the Revs. Grady White, Alvin Loggins and Mike Gaines officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, March 28, from 12 to 2 p.m.
