Dr. Andrew Muse

ATHENS – Dr. Andrew Delone Muse Jr., 74, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009.

Born in Carroll County, he was the son of the late Andrew Delone Sr. and Era Gable Muse. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia, and his medical doctorate degree from the Medical College of Georgia. His internship was through Athens General Hospital, and he began with a private practice of family medicine in Jefferson. In 1966 he returned to school at Emory University, where he completed a residency in general surgery.

He served on the faculty at Emory from 1970-72. In July 1972 he joined practice with Dr. Jack McDonald at the Surgery Clinic where he retired at the end of January, 2005. His staff appointments included Athens Regional Medical Center and St. Mary’s Hospital, both of which he served several terms as Chief of Surgery and BJC Hospital in Commerce.
Dr. Muse served in the Georgia Army National Guard from 1966, and retired as Brigadier General in 2002. He was active as a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and the Southeastern Surgical Congress and a member of the American Medical Association, American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, American Society of General Surgeons, American Society of Military Surgeons, Georgia Surgical Society, Medical Association of Georgia, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, and the Society of Medical Consultants of Armed Forces.
Dr. Muse was a member of the Athens Rotary Club and dual member of Masonic Lodges Unity Lodge #36 F&M and Johnnies Hill Lodge #748, Pendergrass.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Stewart Muse; daughters, Allyson Muse, Athens, Elizabeth (Michael) Layne, Atlanta and Andrea (Lou) Jerman, Granby, Conn.; granddaughters, Kaylee, Sydney and Annabelle Jerman; uncle, Herman Gable; aunts, Mary Kaylor and Erma Gravitt; and numerous cousins.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 14, at 11 a.m., at Beech Haven Baptist Church with Dr. Stewart Simms and Dr. Jim Griffith officiating. Entombment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Donald Branyon, Will Hardman, Jimmy Wilfong, Walter Wilson, Charles Logan, David Maxwell, Larry Medders, Tom Kias and J.R. Coker. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Crawford W. Long Memorial Society. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beech Haven Baptist Church.
