BRASELTON - J.W. “Jake” Spruill, 84, formerly of Suwanee and Dunwoody, died Thursday, February 5, 2009.
Born on July 13, 1926, in DeKalb County, he was the son of the late Bency and Ola Womack Spruill. He was a 1941 graduate of Chamblee High School and attended the University of Georgia. He played professional baseball with the Philadelphia Athletics Farm Club under Connie Mack for seven years. He owned and operated L.S. Hauling in Dunwoody for 20 years, and was a member of Berkley Hill Golf Club in Duluth for 30 years. He was a former member of the Dunwoody United Methodist Church and was a member of the Sugar Hill United Methodist Church for 25 years. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Spruill was preceded in death by a brother, Claude Spruill.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Frances Loyd Spruill, Braselton; daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Craig Hyde, Braselton; son and daughter-in-law, Stan and Karen Spruill, Lawrenceville; grandchildren, Shannon and Eric Wilborn, Ormond Beach, Fla., Brandon Hyde, Antigua, Guatemala, Lauren and Jason Martin, Everett, Wash., Lana Hyde, Braselton, and Kevin Spruill, Lawrenceville; great-grandson, Ethan Paul Wilborn; and other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 8, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Flanigan Funeral home with the Rev. Mari Lane Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Broadlawn Memorial Gardens in Buford. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Sugar Hill United Methodist Church.
Flanigan Funeral Home, Buford, is in charge of arrangements.
