ELBERTON – James “Jake” Thomas Conwell, 82, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at the Elbert County Memorial Hospital.
A native of Madison County, he was the son of the late Alvin and Ruby Mae Lord Conwell. He was a member and deacon of Doves Creek Baptist Church, a United States Army veteran serving in World War II, and owner and operator of Jake’s Custom Crafts. Mr. Conwell was preceded in death by a brother, Dallas Conwell; and sister, Ollie Mae Poss.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Baggett Conwell; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Sherry Conwell, Ila, Larry and Pat Conwell, Monroe; daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Steve Baughcum, Lexington, N.C.; sister, Louise Conwell Sims, Bogart; step-children, John and Martha Baggett, Woodruff, S.C., and Connie and Stan Morse, Watkinsville; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 30, at Doves Creek Baptist Church with Marshall Tribble, and the Revs. Ray Jenkins and Douglas Huff officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Steve Baughcum, Mark Garner, Stanley Morse III, Zach Durden, Joshua T. Conwell and Brad Fielding.
Memorial contributions may be made to Doves Creek Baptist Church.
Berry Funeral Home, Elberton, was in charge of arrangements.
