COMER - Fred Watson Compton, 87, died Wednesday, January 21, 2009, surrounded by his loved ones in the home in which he was born.
Born in Madison County, he was the son of the late Webster G. “Boss” Compton and Mazelle Lord Compton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Dobbs Compton; brothers, Rabun Compton, Rufus Compton; sisters, Glennie Wood, Grace Threlkeld; daughter-in-law: Rhonda Compton. He was retired after 34 years of service with Transcontinental Pipeline Company, was an active lifetime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, and was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and his passion was farming the land in which he grew up as a child, loved ones stated.
Survivors include his children, Paula (Mark) Threlkeld, Tracey (Kerry) Bakker, Charlie Compton; grandchildren, Clay Compton, Randy (Crystal) Compton, Cody (Nicole) Compton, Taylor Bakker, Katy Bakker; and great-granddaughter, Marlee Compton.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 24, at 2 P.M. at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. James F. Creason and Ronnie Moon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Clay Compton, Randy Compton, Cody Threlkeld, Phil Thomas, Grady Threlkeld and Jim Threlkeld. Honorary pallbearers will be James Cooper, Dean Wade, Ellis Rhoden, John Reed, Dennis Wood, Glenn Wood, Hugh Dorsey Compton and Aubrey Thomas.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Oak Grave Baptist Church Building Fund, 9585 Highway 172, Comer, GA 30629.
