MT. AIRY – William Andrew “Slim” Holbrooks, 84, died Sunday, January 18, 2009, at his residence following an extended illness.
Born in Oconee, S.C., on April 28, 1924, he was the son of the late Alex Andrew and Minnie Gertrude Holbrooks. He was retired from Habersham Metal Products and was Baptist. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed spending quality time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, loved ones stated. Mr. Holbrooks was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Stamey; brothers, Junior Holbrooks, Winford Holbrooks; and great-grandson, Cody Holbrooks.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Ellene Smith Holbrooks, Mt. Airy; daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Tommy Taylor, Dot and Ricky Taylor, all of Demorest, Margaret and John Lockman, Mt. Airy, and Lorene and Cliff Case, Clarkesville; son and fiancé, Lee Holbrooks and Pam Stone, Mt. Airy; brothers, Raymond Holbrooks, Baldwin, and Billy Holbrooks, Demorest; sister, Mary Ruth Stephens, Demorest; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 23, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with the Revs. Charles Phillips and Newton Phillips officiating. Burial was in Hazel Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, was in charge of arrangements.
